Being an effective business coach requires
me to give away knowledge and expertise for the edification, growth and
development of people and organizations.
Delivering lofty lectures may be thought
provoking, helpful and even inspiring, but real, meaningful "change" in a person or organization
is often minimal at best.
It was once said that there are
3 types of people who graduate from training or education programs.
1. Those who
MAKE things happen.
2. Those who WATCH
things happen.
3. Those who WONDERED what happened.
The vast majority are those who watch things
happen. They "believe" conceptually, but there is no change
in the life of the person or the organization.
When I'm teaching or speaking to groups, I'm
certainly interested in presenting in a manner which is effective describing the concepts
and principles which are pertinent for growth. But much more than that, I'm
looking for those in the audience who demonstrate by and action
and words that they,
A.) "Get it." and
B.) May be candidates to "make things
happen."
A few weeks ago I had the privilege of
working with such a group of people from the Havco Wood Products Company. They
were targeted as people who could possibly make things happen . They went
through an intensive "train-the-trainer" session with
me that required that they do research, study and practice which included public speaking
(which none of them had ever done) and facilitating a group discussion. I gave
away what I know and now it's their turn to do the same for
others' in the organization.
In the coming weeks and months they will
encounter some encouraging feedback and some negative. Without question, there will be"know it all's" at
every level of the organization who will criticize and second guess their work. (
Welcome to my world! ) However I will continue to coach them through both extremes of
behavior by others' which they are certain to encounter.
Almost every organization provides some
training. Every parent "trains up a child in the way they should go" but do
they really help them or just tell them? I have
become convinced, after 30 years in this business, that there are more than a
few missing pieces in the growth and development process. To be more effective
and to get the biggest bang for the time and money spent, organizations should
consider the following steps.
1. Leaders! TEACH what you know to
others'. To many leaders think they are above it all to humble themselves.
2. Watch people to see who "get's it."
3. Discover passion and "want to" in those
you are working with, looking for those possible candidates for future growth opportunities. People you will want to invest more into.
4. Pour YOURSELF into their growth or find
others' in your organization who can/will...Walk along side them in their
journey. Give yourself away so others can
grow.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
