As a business coach, I have tried to steer my clients away from "incentive programs", "gimmicky contests" and other forms of bribery. While these gimmicks appear reasonable and well meaning, helping your people feel like partners rather than employees will allow them to become engaged in helping the business improve. The carrot and stick approach seldom works, yet organizations continue doing the same things over and over again with the same failed results.
I know some get tired (if not confused) with the constant insistence on Mission/Vision/Values and Strategy, but with out it they will just be profit centers treating their employees as better smelling horses..Take 10 minutes to see the science described by Dan Pink.
